Live events under threat by Ofcom radio mic plans

Some of radio's biggest live events — including Live8 and Party In The Park — would be impossible to broadcast if Ofcom proposals on radio spectrum are passed, Bectu has warned.

The TV and radio union is urging members to lobby their MPs to save one of the vital tools of any outside broadcast — the radio mic.

Next week, Ofcom's consultation into the use of wireless talkback devices comes to an end.

The broadcast regulator has proposed to auction off the airspace currently used by analogue radio mics, most probably to telecoms companies.

Presenters and engineers are increasingly reliant on radio mics when broadcasting from live events — both on-stage and backstage — as well as when covering breaking news stories or vox-popping the locals.

Ofcom's proposal is to leave just one analogue channel free for wireless devices, but this would limit the number of radio mics that can be used in any one area to eight.

Instead, the regulator would encourage broadcasters to switch over to digital microphones.

But Bectu has warned that this technology is in its infancy, and often comes with a slight delay.

It is urging members to write to their MPs, asking them to sign an Early Day Motion on the issue which has been tabled in the House of Commons. There is also an online petition running on the Number 10 website.

Interested parties have until next Tuesday (20 March) to make a submission to Ofcom's consultation.
