A freelance radio presenter for LBC and BBC London has launched a support website for stepmothers who are struggling to feel any emotional attachment to their new partner's children.Alex Thomas — a former weekend overnight presenter on BBC London and occasional host of LBC's Through the Night — set up childlessstepmums.co.uk after finding a lack of support for women who find themselves with stepchildren.
Thomas met her partner four years ago when they working on the same radio programme, but felt excluded whenever she was around his two children.
In a piece for today's Guardian, she said: "I felt utterly isolated. There were counsellors for single fathers, single mothers, stepchildren — every element of a broken family, in fact, apart from stepmothers."
The site has already attracted 1,200 members, with many stepmothers logging on to discuss their relationships with the children their new partner had from a previous marriage.
