Irish radio reinforces alcohol ad code

Irish radio presenters were reminded last week of a voluntary code aimed at avoiding the advertising of alcohol when young people are listening.

The code states that any programmes where more than a third of the audience is under 18 must not be sponsored by alcohol advertisers or feature ads for booze.

Today FM programme director Tom Hardy told barkeeper.ie: "The idea is that we stare hard at audience figures twice a year and let the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland know where there is concern over programmes due to audience profile."

Presenters were reminded at last week's seminar that the voluntary code prohibits them from glamorising or encouraging the use of alcohol.

The code was adopted by the industry partly to avoid any legislation being passed on the matter.
