Radio 1 and Virgin Radio are in the running for this year's Webby awards, recognising innovation on the web.The BBC pop station has been shortlisted in two categories — best music website and best radio site.
The site is competing against last.fm in the music category, while in the radio category it faces competition from the Virgin Radio website, National Public Radio, CBC Radio 3 and iCat fm.
Virgin Radio's website picked up best radio site in 2005 — since then, virginradio.co.uk has undergone a major redesign, overseen by director of digital media, James Cridland.
The BBC is also shortlisted in the events category for its online coverage of the Electric Proms.
More than 8,000 websites were entered into this year's contest. In each category, two awards are handed out — one selected by a panel of judges, and a "People's Voice" award selected by web users.
