A Government initiative to help disadvantaged teenagers try their hands at radio — among other media projects — has dished out its first round of funding, totalling more than £800,000.
Mediabox, a new £6 million initiative from the Department for Education and Skills, has earmarked a total of £835,822 for 18 organisations.
The scheme is designed to foster a new generation of media professionals and give them a platform to talk about life in their communities and their hopes for the future.
Mediabox offers grants for youth radio projects, as well as TV, print, photography and new media.
The second round of funding is now open to applications, with grants available of up to £80,000. The deadline for organisations to apply is 22 May.
