Gambling radio ad ban set to be lifted

Casinos and betting shops will no longer be banned from advertising on the radio under new rules announced today.

As part of the Gambling Act 2005, the new rules on advertising are due to come into effect this September.

Gambling companies will have more freedom to advertise on television and radio — provided their ads comply with a strict code of conduct.

They set out scheduling restrictions which would ban radio ads for gambling when people under the age of 18 are most likely to be listening.

The new ads must not offer gambling as a way out of debt, or suggest that the activity improves self-esteem or attractiveness.

Advertisers who break the rules may be referred to the Gambling Commission, the Advertising Standards Authority or Ofcom.
